We encourage students to become involved in their communities.  It is important to get involved in projects within your community and discover new ways to participate.  Many cities, like Rochester N.Y., are rich in history and are in need of individuals who would like to contribute to preservation and clean up projects.

It is always good to acquire a greater appreciation of where you live as an important source of historical information as well as respect these historic places that enable us to make connections to the past, present, and future.

The New York State social studies curriculum places emphasis upon President Lincoln during the Civil War era.   The activities of other prominent politicans such as William Henry Seward and Gerrit Smith are entirely overlooked.  This presents students with imabalnced perception of history as Lincoln is credited for actions that many other main players helped to achieve.  To omit these social reformers and political participants provides an innacurate and extremely favorable view of Lincoln and his efforts to save the Union.  Abolitionism is discussed in the curriculum but it is limited to a very small number of individuals.

This website is designed to be utilized by students and teachers to explore the many individuals that are generally disregarded in the curriculum but played a significant role in social movements and the Civil War.
